This summer the Lower School library had some major renovations so I thought I would share about them. We serve over 450 kiddos and it was becoming clear that we needed more room. We also wanted a space that had designated reading and learning areas, and that would allow for multiple classes at a time. So we took our old library and turned it into The Lower School Learning Commons.
We got some wonderful new furniture where students can read and relax.
A learning area where a variety of lessons can occur.
A story area which we are calling the story steps, and a portable Smart Board that can move wherever we might need it!
Our collection of books is now out with the rest of the books in the Montgomery Library. It only made sense to combine it and make it all one big happy family!
We now check out books at the main circulation desk, and it is now not so confusing to people as to which one they can check out books at. Overall, we have made some very much needed improvements.
As the children came in this week they oohed and ahhed at all of the changes. They loved how much room we now have. They also loved the story steps and reading space. Older students even came to check it all out and we heard a lot of, "How come it wasn't like this when we were here?" Ha! We promised them they could come and utilize it whenever. Because it was all new I spent the week reviewing library procedures and giving tours of where everything now is. It will take some time to get adjusted to things even for me.
Our library theme this year is a movie theme. We will be "starring" students who like to read and asking them to make recommendations for good books, just like you might do with a movie. We had this awesome marquee that wasn't being used so we thought why not? It sure has brightened up the library and overall it makes me excited about what week two will bring!
